The Great Equalizer
A monumental canvas on the transformative promise of education — the one inheritance that cannot be taken from the poor, and the one force that consistently lifts people across every boundary of circumstance.
A chronicler of Filipino life — where family, faith,
and sacrifice are rendered with quiet, enduring power.
"Art does not stop at beauty.
It reaches into what we carry —
what we sacrifice, who we love,
and what we refuse to forget."
Celso Duazo Pepito has spent more than five decades rendering the Filipino experience into images of lasting humanity. Trained under the celebrated Martino Abellana at the University of the Philippines Cebu, he began his practice in the Impressionist-Realist tradition before evolving toward Cubism — a shift that brought greater structural tension and emotional charge to his deeply personal subjects.
Inspired by Vicente Manansala's social realism and Picasso's formal daring, Pepito forged his own visual language — one that speaks of family devotion, spiritual resilience, communal labor, and the quiet dignity of ordinary Filipino life. Working across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, his art functions as both intimate document and cultural testimony.
His work has been exhibited across Asia, the Americas, and Europe — in Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Peru, Luxembourg, and New York. He is a founding member of Cebu Artists Incorporated, Kolor Sugbo, and Ugnayang Filipino Arts Foundation, and a recipient of the Tatak UP Award, the Outstanding Individual Award in Visual Arts, and Sugbuanong Bahandi. He remains an active mentor, shaping the next generation of Cebuano painters.
Works spanning five decades — from social critique to tender portraits of faith and family.
A monumental canvas on the transformative promise of education — the one inheritance that cannot be taken from the poor, and the one force that consistently lifts people across every boundary of circumstance.
A portrait of the struggle inherent to all aspiration — rendered not with despair but with the hard-won composure of someone who has chosen to persist.
The transmission of faith across generations — a father's unspoken duty not only to clothe and feed, but to nourish the spirit of the child who will carry the family's story forward.
Love rendered as active force — not sentiment, but the very mechanism by which families hold together, communities endure, and resilience becomes possible.
On the intertwined nature of Marian and Christological devotion — the act of honoring the Mother as inseparable from faith in the Son.
A complex, layered portrait of womanhood — its contradictions, its capacities, and ultimately its irreplaceable role as source of unity and peace.
Music as metaphor — that a word of encouragement, a smile, a hand on the shoulder can reach further than any song and set a life in motion.
Sacrifice reframed — not as loss, but as the very measure by which success becomes meaningful and fully felt.
A meditation on cultural identity — the particular pride of belonging to a place, a cuisine, a way of life that is entirely one's own.
Love chooses no schedule. In the margins of a busy life, tenderness still finds its way — and that is everything.
An early masterwork — stark, prescient, and still urgent. The artist's first reckoning with the social diseases that corrupt aspiration and corrode national life.
On the nobility of ambition — the honest, earned aspiration to become more, done with fairness and without apology.
Rest is necessary, but stillness invites stagnation. Dance if you must — aspiration demands forward motion.
Travel reveals what solitude cannot — that the world is both larger and more intimately human than we imagined.
A quiet provocation — asking us to measure success not in wealth or recognition, but in the quality of presence we bring to ordinary moments.
"Art does not stop at beauty. It reaches into what we carry — what we sacrifice, who we love, and what we refuse to forget. When I paint a mother, I am painting every mother who worked through exhaustion. When I paint a child reaching upward, I am painting every dream that was passed down quietly, without words. Filipino life is full of these moments — moments that deserve to be seen, held, and remembered."
— Celso Duazo Pepito
Over five decades, Pepito has remained committed to a singular vision: that the everyday experiences of Filipino families — their labors, their faith, their small acts of love — are worthy of serious artistic attention and enduring preservation.
